Birnam Wood in Montecito is the kind of neighborhood where the driveways are long and the gates are real. I got a call from a guy standing next to his 2003 Honda Pilot about halfway up his driveway, staring at the ignition like it had personally offended him.
His key had snapped. Not bent, not worn, actually broken, with about half the blade still sitting inside the ignition cylinder. He'd already talked to one other locksmith who told him the cylinder needed to come out and get drilled. New cylinder, new keys, the whole rebuild. He called me because that answer didn't sit right with him.
I pulled up and looked at what was in there. The fragment was seated but not deep, and the wafer surfaces were clean. I worked the broken piece out without touching the wafers, extracted it intact, then read the lock to get the cut depths. Decoded clean on the first pass.
I cut a new key from the decode and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port to pair the transponder. Tested it. Turned right over, immobilizer light went off the way it should.
He asked me twice if the cylinder was really okay. It was. His original lock, his original cylinder, working exactly the way it did before. The car looked the same leaving as it did when I got there.
The other locksmith's plan would have cost him a good chunk more and left him with a lock he never needed replaced. Sometimes the second opinion is the right one.
