Met a guy at the Ojai Post Office Tower parking lot who'd been fighting with his 2023 Pilot for a week. Every morning, same drill: walk up, door handle wouldn't respond, had to dig out the physical key like it was 2005.
He'd already done the battery swap. Twice. Still getting the "Walk Away Auto Lock Malfunction" message on the dash. Honda dealer wanted him to drop it off for "diagnostic evaluation" before they'd quote anything.
I popped the fob open right there on his hood. The NCF29A1M chip looked fine, battery contacts were clean. But when I checked the key's signal strength with my frequency counter, it was barely registering. The transmitter board had a hairline crack you could only see at the right angle.
Cut him a new KR5TP-4, transferred his emergency blade, and paired it through the OBD port. Total time: maybe 35 minutes while he sorted mail from his PO box. When the door handle started responding to touch again, he just stood there testing it over and over.
The dealer would've kept his car at least overnight, maybe ordered the wrong fob since some parts guys still list the old KR5V2X. Plus whatever they charge these days. He got it fixed in a parking lot for way less than their diagnostic fee alone.
