A software engineer in Goleta, over near Stow Grove Park, called me after pricing a spare smart key through the Honda dealer. They quoted him piece by piece: key blank, cutting, programming labor, shop fee. Then he asked what happens if the car is not drivable. Towing on top of everything else.

The 2016 Pilot runs Honda's HITAG 3 protocol on the 47 chip platform, and the immobilizer communicates through the OBD-II port under the dash on the driver side. I plugged in my IM608 Pro, pulled the existing key data, registered the new KR5V2X with part number 72147-TBA-A11, and cut the emergency insert blade to match.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes. When he came back out, I had him test every button: lock, unlock, hatch, remote start, panic. Then the walk-away auto lock and the walk-up proximity unlock on both front doors. Clean start on the push button, no hesitation.
He kept the old fob in his laptop bag and put the new one on his ring. Two working keys now instead of one bad day waiting to happen. The whole job cost him a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and he never left the parking lot.
