Near Lake Los Carneros, there's a stretch of park where people fish and walk dogs and generally lose track of small objects. That's exactly where a guy lost his only key to his 2012 Honda Pilot. He'd had it since he bought the truck used, one key, never made a spare. By the time he called me, he'd already retraced his path twice and checked with the park staff. Nothing.

I pulled up, decoded the lock mechanically, and cut a fresh blade to match. Then I connected to the OBD port, ran the all-keys-lost sequence, wiped the old key from the system, and registered the new remote head key as the primary. First crank, it started clean. I cut him a second key on the spot so he'd have a backup.
He asked if he should call the dealer anyway to get it "verified." I told him the car already told us everything was good when it started. That was the verification.
He drove out of that lot with two working keys and didn't have to wait until Monday. The dealer comparison came up and I just said he saved a good chunk. That seemed like enough.
