I got a call from a guy in Downtown Fillmore who'd been driving around on one key for about two years. Said he kept meaning to get a spare made and never got around to it. Then one afternoon he came out of a shop on Central Avenue and the key blade had snapped at the base of the housing. The blade was still in his pocket, but the fob body with the transponder was sitting somewhere in the door lock cylinder. Not great.
He'd already called the dealer. The appointment was four days out, and the quote he got included a tow if he couldn't get the car moved, plus separate line items for the key, cutting, and programming. He found me right after that call.
I drove out to meet him. First thing was getting the broken blade section out of the cylinder without damaging the lock. Once that was handled, I had a clean working surface. Cut a new blade to his vehicle, assembled the remote head key, and programmed it to his car on the spot using my programmer through the OBD port. Then I walked every button, tested the lock and unlock at range, and had him crank it twice to confirm the transponder was reading clean.
The whole job was done on Central Avenue in about 40 minutes. He left with two working keys instead of one, which was the whole point of the story he should have handled two years earlier.
