1996 Audi A6
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Audi to the dealer for a replacement key?

Not for this car, no. The 1996 A6 key is mechanical. There is no module enrollment, no security data access, nothing that requires dealer equipment. A locksmith who carries the right European-profile blank and has a code cutter in the van handles this entirely on site. The dealer will sometimes make a mechanical key job sound involved because that is their process, not the car's requirement. I come to you, I cut the key, done.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, your registration or title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or door jamb sticker to confirm the key specification before I cut anything. That step is the same whether you go to a locksmith or a dealer. On a 1996 A6 specifically, I am just matching the key profile and the cut to your car. No authorization calls, no waiting on a parts order, no original key card required.

Q: My 1996 A6 key turns hard and feels like it might stick. Is that a lock problem or a key problem?

Usually both, and they feed each other. On a car this age, the ignition cylinder and door locks have a lot of miles on them. A worn key starts to drag in the cylinder, the cylinder wears unevenly from that drag, and before long the key barely turns or starts binding on the way out.

Q: Can I get a copy made at a hardware store or do I need a locksmith?

Hardware stores are a gamble on this one. The blade profile Audi used on the mid-nineties A6 is not a common edge-cut key that any counter machine handles easily. If the store does not stock the right blank, they will either turn you away or try to cut it on a close-but-not-quite substitute, which can cause exactly the binding problem described above.

1996 Audi A6 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the Wagon Wheel area of Oxnard on a Thursday afternoon when the call came in. A woman needed a replacement key for her 1996 Audi A6.

She had one key left and it was starting to look rough, the bow cracked and the blade worn down enough that she was nervous about it snapping off in the ignition one day. Smart call to handle it before that happened.

She asked me what was involved. I told her it was a cut-to-vehicle job, no programming, no modules, no diagnostic port. Just the right blank and a good cut. She sounded surprised. She had called around a bit and someone had quoted her a long list of steps that did not apply to this car at all.

I decoded the existing key on site and cut her a new one from a blank that matched the Audi profile for that generation. I tested it in the ignition, the door lock, and the trunk. Everything turned clean. The whole thing took under twenty minutes.

She mentioned the dealer had told her to bring it in and leave it, like there was some involved process. There was not. It is a metal key. The dealer comparison barely came up, because once she had the new key in her hand and the car started on the first try, there was not much left to say.

Audi A6 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call and I come to you wherever you are in the Wagon Wheel area of Oxnard. For a 1996 Audi A6, this is a pure lockout job. I carry the blanks and cutting equipment in the van, and I can decode the door lock cylinder on site to cut a working key even if you have nothing to hand me. No tow, no dealer trip, no waiting for a callback from a service department.
