Got a call from a woman near Del Sol Park in Oxnard who had snapped her only key trying to turn the ignition on her 1996 Audi A6. The blade broke clean at the shoulder, and the tip was still jammed in the lock cylinder.
She had already called around. The Audi dealer told her the car needed to be towed in, the ignition cylinder might need replacing, and the whole thing could take a few days because they would need to order the key blank and verify ownership through Audi's system. She did not have a few days.
I got there, extracted the broken blade tip from the ignition with a hook pick and some patience. The break was clean enough that I could read the original cuts from both halves laid together on my cutting mat. Cut a fresh HU66 blank and cloned the Megamos ID13 chip from the transponder housing of the broken key.
The part nobody thinks about on these C4 Audis: the Bosch Immo I system reads the transponder through a ring antenna around the ignition. If that antenna has corroded connections, a brand new key still will not start the car. Hers was fine. Key turned, engine fired, and she just sat there for a second like she was waiting for something to go wrong.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes in her driveway. No tow, no dealer wait, and she kept the broken key pieces as a souvenir.
