I got a call from a shop near The Collection in Oxnard, one of those European-specialist places that handles the stuff the chain shops wave off.
The situation was already past the normal starting point: another locksmith had attempted an all-keys-lost job on a customer's 2013 A6, something went sideways during the module read, and now the immobilizer was in a partially locked state. The shop's own tech had tried going back through the OBD port to recover it. Nothing. The car would not acknowledge any key at all.

The tricky part was the recovery, not the key itself. A mid-read abort during a job like this leaves the module in a state that standard tools just bounce off. The bench read bypasses all of that because you are working with the chip directly, not asking the module to cooperate through software it no longer trusts.
Total time was right around two hours. The car left running the same afternoon. The shop told me the customer had already gotten a quote from the dealer that assumed a module replacement on top of the programming. That would have meant waiting on parts. Coming out to where the car already was, recovering what was there, cost a fraction of what they wanted down that road.
