I got a call from a guy over in Windsor North, off the River Ridge side of Oxnard, on a weekday morning. He had a 1998 Audi A6 that he'd owned since his kids were young, and the flip key had finally given out after years of daily use. The blade wasn't the problem. The fob body had cracked around the hinge, and at some point the blade had torqued just enough to damage the transponder connection inside. Car wouldn't start. Remote did nothing.
He'd already been to an auto parts store that told him they couldn't help with it. He'd looked up the dealer, found out the nearest Audi store wasn't exactly around the corner, and decided to call me instead.
I pulled up to his driveway with the key already sourced. On a late-90s A6 like this, the flip key housing can be swapped and the internal components transferred if they're intact, but his transponder had taken enough abuse that we were working fresh. Cut the blade to his vehicle, got the transponder enrolled to the immobilizer, synced the remote. Four buttons, CR2032, and the whole thing tested clean before I touched the ignition.
He turned the key, car fired right up. He held it for a second like he was waiting for something to go wrong. Nothing did.
He mentioned the dealer quote he'd gotten over the phone. I didn't press on it. He just said it was "a lot" and left it there. What I charged him was a fraction of that, and he didn't have to drive the car anywhere, which at that point he couldn't have done anyway.
