Got a call around 10pm from a guy in College Park in Oxnard. Tax season accountant, still at the office in a dim parking lot, zero keys for his 1999 A6. Gone. Checked his desk, the break room, retraced his steps through the lot. Nothing.
He was about to call a ride home and deal with it tomorrow. I asked him to stay put and walk me through a couple things on the phone. Look through the windshield, driver side, base of the glass. He found the VIN with his phone flashlight. Then I had him pull up his insurance app for the registration. It was all there.
That VIN told me everything before I left: C5 platform, Immobilizer III, Megamos ID48 chip, and that his key was the 4D0837231P four-button flip. I prepped the right blank and grabbed a fresh CR2032.
On site, I used my VVDI Prog to read the cluster EEPROM off the instrument cluster board for the immobilizer security data, then generated a working ID48 transponder value and cut the blade. Programmed the new key through OBD and built the remote under the parking lot lights.
He turned the key, the immobilizer light on the dash dropped out, and the 2.8 fired right up. He just sat there for a second like he didn't trust it.
Drove home that night. The dealer was closed anyway, and a tow plus their timeline would have meant days without the car.
