There's a tennis club up in the Upper East side of Santa Barbara, and on a Saturday afternoon I got a call from a coach who had been there since early morning running clinics. He'd set his A6 key down on the equipment cart, a kid bumped it, and it went under the bleachers and got stepped on. The flip blade was bent at the pivot and the shell was cracked along one side. The remote still beeped when he pressed lock, but he wasn't about to trust a bent blade in the ignition cylinder.
I pulled up while he was finishing a session. Worked off the hood of my van while he wrapped up.
First thing I did was decode the blade before I touched the new key stock. On a bent key you can still read the cuts if you work carefully, and I wanted to confirm the cut matched what I was about to produce. It did. Cut the new blade, transferred the chip over from the cracked housing into a fresh shell, verified the seating. Then I connected to the OBD port to confirm the immobilizer was seeing the key correctly and there were no stored faults from however many times he'd been clicking the damaged fob.
Then I did the part he wasn't expecting. I walked about thirty feet toward the courts and ran every button. Walked back. Started the car three times. He asked why three times. I told him an intermittent start fault on a first test means nothing, but three clean starts in a row means the chip registration is solid and the ignition cylinder didn't get damaged when he tried the bent blade earlier that morning.
He'd already called the dealer before he called me. They told him to come in Monday and plan on leaving it for a day or two. He saved a good chunk by the time I drove off, and he made his afternoon session without moving the car.
