A mountain biker rolled into a state park lot in the Presidio area of Santa Barbara for an early morning ride. Keys went into his jersey pocket. Somewhere between the trailhead and the switchbacks, they came out. He searched his pack, retraced about a quarter mile of the trail, asked at the ranger station. Nothing.
His 2003 A6 was sitting in the lot with no way in and no way to start it. He called a tow company first. They told him he'd be looking at a trip to the dealer, probably overnight, maybe two days. That's when he found me.
I got to the lot, and the first order of business was getting the door open, which meant decoding the lock mechanically. I picked and decoded the door cylinder by reading each wafer position inside it, which gave me the exact cut I needed for a new blade. No original key, no problem. That's the starting point for any all-keys-lost job on a car this age.
Once I had the mechanical side done, I moved to the programming sequence. On a C5 A6 like this, the immobilizer PIN can be read through the OBD port with the right equipment. I ran the all-keys-lost procedure, which clears the old key from memory and registers the new remote flip key as the primary. Cut the blade, coded the transponder, synced the remote functions, and tested everything standing in that dirt parking lot.
He was back on the road in about an hour. Didn't need a tow, didn't need a dealer appointment, didn't need to leave his car overnight. The dealer route would have cost him more than double what I charged, plus a tow on top of that.
All-keys-lost sounds like the worst-case scenario. On a C5-generation Audi, with the right tools, it's a manageable mobile job.
