Early morning call out near the Milpas Street district in Santa Barbara. A guy had one flip key to his 2002 Audi A6, bought the car used a couple years back, never got around to a spare. The key cracked at the pivot hinge and the blade snapped clean off when he tried to fold it shut. Half the blade was stuck in the driver's door lock. Zero working keys.
He had the broken shell in his hand with the circuit board still inside. That matters a lot on these C5 A6s. The board carries the Megamos ID48 chip, and if it survived, I can read the transponder data directly instead of running a full all-keys-lost procedure through the Immo III module on the cluster.
Board was fine. I extracted the broken blade stub from the lock cylinder with my Lishi pick, read the chip with my VVDI Key Tool, and transferred the data onto a fresh ID48 chip seated in a new 4D0837231P shell with a clean-cut blade. Then I rebuilt his original electronics into a second new shell so he'd walk away with a spare too.
Forty minutes, start to finish, right in the parking lot. He went from stuck to holding two working flip keys. The dealer quoted him a week-plus wait and wanted way more than he expected. He just wanted to get to work on time.
