The flip key itself has a transponder that has to be registered to the vehicle's immobilizer, and that step requires professional diagnostic equipment and access to GM's programming infrastructure. Dealers also factor in shop labor rates, service writer time, and the cost of the key itself at OEM pricing. For a 2013 Cruze, a dealer visit typically means dropping it off, waiting, and paying for each piece of the job separately: the fob, the blade cut, and the programming as line items.

When you go to start the car, the ignition reads the transponder and checks it against what the immobilizer has on file. If it matches, the engine runs. If it doesn't, or if the key hasn't been programmed at all, the car cranks and shuts right back down. The remote entry side and the immobilizer side operate independently, which is why a key that locks and unlocks the doors just fine can still refuse to start the engine if the transponder wasn't programmed correctly.

A few possibilities. First, check that the CR2032 is seated flat with good contact on both sides of the clip. A slightly tilted cell gives a partial connection and acts almost identical to a dead battery. Second, the contact spring inside the fob can get bent or corroded, especially on fobs that have been pried open with a screwdriver instead of a proper tool. Clean the contacts and make sure the spring has tension.

If the battery and contacts check out, the transmitter board itself can wear out. These fobs are over a decade old now. The range on a healthy Cruze flip key should be workable from a normal parking-lot distance. If you're getting a few feet on a fresh CR2032 and clean contacts, the fob hardware is probably done.

One more thing: if you see a security or key-related warning on the dash alongside the range problem, that changes the diagnosis. That points toward the transponder or the immobilizer side, which is a different job than a weak remote signal.

Can I buy a replacement flip key online and just have the blade cut, without programming it?

The blade cut alone won't get you into the car without the remote being programmed, and it definitely won't start the engine. The 2013 Cruze needs the transponder in the key registered to the vehicle before it will run. An unprogrammed key that's been cut correctly will physically turn the ignition and crank the engine, then stall out immediately. Every time.

If you already bought a replacement fob online, that's fine. Bring it with you or have it ready when I arrive and I can program it on site. Just make sure the replacement matches the factory fob ID on your original so the remote functions pair correctly alongside the transponder.
