A woman at her apartment carport over in the Channel Islands neighborhood in Oxnard had the most common version of key trouble there is. Bought the 2015 Cruze used, got one key with it, always meant to get a spare. Years passed.
The flip key shell cracked at the hinge and the blade snapped clean off inside the driver door lock. Half stuck in the cylinder, half dangling in a broken housing in her hand. Zero working keys.
I got to her and started with the broken fob. The Hitag2 ID46 chip inside the cracked OHT01060512 housing was still intact, so I read the transponder data off it with my VVDI2. That meant I could skip the full all-keys-lost security relearn procedure, which on these first-gen Cruze BCMs runs through a timed security access cycle that adds real minutes to the job.
I extracted the blade fragment from the door lock, decoded her HU100 cylinder, and cut two fresh sidewinder blades. Transplanted the original chip into a new 5-button flip shell, then programmed the second key as a spare through the OBD port.
She watched me pop the old chip out of the cracked case. Tiny thing. She held it between two fingers and just shook her head, like she couldn't believe that little piece was the difference between driving and not.
Went from zero keys to two in about 35 minutes. A full all-keys-lost job without the broken pieces would have taken longer and cost more. The dealer she called first quoted her a tow-in, a VIN-cut key order, and a wait measured in days. She got same-day, on-site, for a fraction of what they wanted.
