Saturday night in Ventura, near the Ventura Botanical Gardens, a parent called me from a bowling alley parking lot. Birthday party. Car seats in the back. A van full of kids waiting on rides. Their 2006 Chrysler 300 wouldn't respond to anything.
They hit the unlock button and got nothing. Tried the lock, the trunk, the panic. Dead remote. Then they put the key in the ignition and turned it. The SKIM light on the dash stayed solid red and the engine wouldn't crank. Just a click and silence.
I was about fifteen minutes out and already had the right blank on the van. Their key was the OHT692427AA remote head, Y160-PT blade, and the CR2032 inside was completely flat. But the dead battery wasn't the whole story. The SKIM module had dropped the transponder registration, probably from a voltage dip or a loose battery connection that corrupted the learned key data. The dash was throwing a solid red SKIM indicator, which on these means the module doesn't see a valid transponder at all.
I pulled the 4-digit PIN from the SKIM through the OBD-II port, reprogrammed the transponder to the immobilizer, and dropped in a fresh CR2032. Remote range came back immediately. Ignition caught on the first turn. Tested all four buttons and the SKIM light cycled off the way it should.
The mom said she'd been planning to leave the car there overnight with the car seats still inside. They drove the birthday crew home instead.
