I was already working the Hillsides area of Ventura on a Saturday evening when a second call came in. A parent had come out from a birthday party to find the 2006 Chrysler 300 completely unresponsive. The remote did nothing. Then they tried the ignition and got nothing there either.
They had a car full of kids waiting and no backup key. They called mostly just to find out if anything could happen that night, not really expecting it could.
I was about fifteen minutes out and already had the right remote head key blank in the van. Not ordered, not sourced the next day. Sitting in a labeled drawer behind my seat.
When I got there the issue was layered. The CR2032 was dead, which knocked out the remote. But the ignition side had also lost its learned state, which is a separate problem that a battery swap alone would never have fixed. I replaced the battery, cut the blade to the vehicle, and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port using the PIN pulled for the VIN. First turn, engine running.
I walked every button with the owner standing there watching before I handed it back. Full remote range, ignition solid.
The dealer route would have meant leaving the car there until Monday, minimum. Nobody said that part out loud, but we were both thinking it. The kids got home that night.
