Out in Casa Conejo, near the mobile home park tucked off the main drag, I got a call from a retired school bus driver. He had a 2017 Chrysler 300 and wanted a spare key made before a long road trip. Reasonable ask. He had the original fob working fine, just wanted a backup.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to bring the car in, schedule a service appointment, and plan on leaving it for the better part of a day. He was not interested in any of that. His neighbor had used me before on a Dodge and handed him my number.
I pulled up to his driveway with everything already in the van. He watched me confirm the VIN, pull up the vehicle, and walk through the programming sequence on my diagnostic unit. The 2017 300 needs the new fob enrolled through the vehicle's security system before it does anything. There is no shortcut sequence, no button trick. You need the tool. I had it.
The fob was cut and registered in about 30 minutes. I tested lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons, then had him walk up to the car from a distance to confirm the proximity start was reading the new fob correctly.
He asked what the dealer had quoted him. I told him to call and find out for comparison. When he did, right there in the driveway, he just shook his head a little. He saved a good chunk and never had to leave his house.
