Out near the Omer Rains Bike Trail in Ventura, a woman called me at 7:30 in the morning. Her toddler had a fever and the pediatrician had a cancellation at 8:15. Her 2007 Chrysler 300 would not start.
She had been wiggling the key, pulling it out, reinserting it. Nothing. The dash just sat there with the red SKIM light solid instead of flashing and going out the way it should.

Her remote head key, part number 56040649AC, had a blade worn down past the point where the WIN module's internal wafers could read a clean cut. The transponder electronics inside were fine, board and all. I decoded the lock, cut a fresh Y160 blade to spec, and transferred her working board into a new shell.
Then I cycled the SKIM relearn through the OBD port using her vehicle's 4-digit PIN. Watched the red security light on the cluster flash, pause, and go dark. Engine turned over clean.
From her phone call to her engine running was 38 minutes. She made the 8:15 with the toddler. The whole time I was working she kept checking the clock on her phone, not watching what I was doing. That told me everything about where her head was.
Sometimes the gap between a locksmith and a dealer is just who picks up the phone early enough.
