1999 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1999 GMC Savana actually use?

It's a standard metal key cut to the vehicle. No remote, no fob, no battery to replace. You put it in the ignition and turn it, same as any basic key from that era. The replacement process is mechanical: cut a new blade to match the lock and ignition, and you're done. That's it.

Q: Why does key replacement feel so slow at the dealer even when the job seems simple?

It's the workflow, not the work. Even on a simple cut-key job, a dealer writes a repair order, assigns it to a tech, and bills in labor increments that don't match the actual time on the vehicle. A key that takes a few minutes to cut gets wrapped inside a half-hour or hour labor block. Add in scheduling delays, a busy service lane, or a day where the right person isn't available, and a simple job stretches out.

Q: I have a 1999 Savana and no idea what my key code is. Can you still make a key?

Yes. If the key code isn't in your paperwork and isn't stamped somewhere you can find it, I decode the lock directly. Reading the cuts off a door lock or the ignition cylinder is a standard part of the job. You don't need to walk in with a code. That's what the tools are for.

Q: My key turns but the Savana won't start. Is that a key problem?

On a 1999 Savana with a mechanical key, if the key turns the ignition and the engine doesn't start, the key itself is almost certainly not the cause. The key's only job is mechanical: actuate the ignition cylinder. If that's happening, the no-start is somewhere else in the system, whether that's fuel, electrical, or the ignition switch itself behind the cylinder.

1999 GMC Savana Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Sunday morning in Ventura, out near Saticoy. A guy called because his 1999 GMC Savana wouldn't let him in. He'd broken his only key off in the door lock the night before, pulled out the shank, but the tip was still in the cylinder. He had somewhere to be and zero backup.

I got there and the broken tip came out of the cylinder with an extractor. No drama. From there I decoded the lock, confirmed the cut, and made him a new key on the spot off the van.

He stood there watching like he expected it to be a bigger production. It wasn't. That's kind of the point. The whole job was done before he finished his coffee. He asked if I could cut him a second one right then, which I did.

The dealer was never really part of this conversation. They don't do mobile, they don't work Sundays, and a broken-key extraction plus a new cut isn't the kind of job that needs a service department anyway.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a GMC dealer take for a key replacement on an older van like this?▼

For a 1999 Savana, the actual key cutting takes a few minutes once someone is on it. The problem is getting someone on it. Dealers schedule these jobs like any other service visit: you call, you get an open slot, you drop the vehicle, you wait. If the key cutter isn't in that day or the service advisor doesn't flag it as a quick job, it sits. A mobile locksmith skips all of that.
