2006 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Santa Barbara?

Depends on where you are and what is on the schedule when you call. For The Mesa and surrounding Santa Barbara neighborhoods, I give you a real arrival window on the phone, not a vague "a few hours." Mobile means I am already out, not waiting at a shop for the next appointment. Call and ask.

Q: Can I get a key made today?

Almost always, yes. The 2006 Savana takes a standard GM key blank that I carry on the truck. As long as I can decode your existing key, read the lock, or access a key code on file for your van, I can cut and test a working replacement the same day you call. No ordering parts, no waiting on a dealer technician to have an opening.

Q: My 2006 Savana ignition feels stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is that a key problem or something worse?

Both are possible, and the key gets checked first. On vans with this much age and mileage, the key blade wears gradually and the cuts get shallow. A worn key can feel like a stiff ignition when the real problem is just a blade that no longer matches the tumblers cleanly. Get a fresh, accurately cut key and test it before assuming the cylinder is the issue. That said, the ignition cylinders on these vans do wear out.

Q: I only have one key for my Savana. Should I get a spare cut now or wait until I actually need one?

Get the spare now. One key on a van this age is a bad position to be in. If that single key gets lost, left inside the van, or breaks off in the ignition or a door lock, you are looking at a lockout situation instead of a simple spare-key job. On a mechanical key vehicle, getting a second key cut while you still have a working original is the easiest version of this job.

2006 GMC Savana Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Sunday morning. A driver from up near The Mesa called me about his 2006 GMC Savana. He had one key left, it had been through years of hard use hauling people and gear around Santa Barbara, and that morning it finally gave out on him. The blade had worn down enough that the ignition was reading it wrong. The van would not turn over. He had places to be.

I got to him in about 40 minutes. Brought the van out of a church lot near The Mesa neighborhood and got to work right there in the parking lot. The fix was a properly cut replacement key, decoded off his existing worn blade and verified against the lock. No appointment, no tow, no waiting until Monday for a dealer service writer to work him into the schedule.

He was back on the road before the lot even cleared out. The dealer comparison barely came up. He just needed someone who showed up, did the job, and did not make it complicated.

How long does a 2006 GMC Savana key replacement take?▼

For a mechanical key like the one on the 2006 Savana, the job is faster than most people expect. Once I am at your vehicle, cutting and fitting a replacement key typically runs 15 to 30 minutes. If I can decode the existing worn key or pull a code on file, it goes even quicker. There is no programming wait, no security relearn timer, no OBD hookup.
