2016 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2016 GMC Savana use?

It uses a transponder key. That means a metal key blade cut to your vehicle's lock profile, with a transponder chip embedded in the plastic head. No remote, no buttons, no fob battery. You turn it in the ignition cylinder and the chip communicates with the immobilizer to allow the engine to start. The cut has to match the locks and the chip has to be programmed to the vehicle. Both matter.

Q: Why does key programming at the dealer take so long when the actual work is quick?

Dealer infrastructure. The programming itself isn't the bottleneck. It's the service order process, tech availability, parts sourcing, and billing structure. Labor gets billed in blocks regardless of how long the actual task runs. On a commercial van, you're also lower priority than the passenger vehicles filling the service bays. A mobile locksmith does the same programming work on site, without the overhead.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made without going to a GMC dealer?

Yes. A qualified mobile automotive locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement transponder key for the 2016 Savana on site. You don't need to tow the vehicle to a dealer or wait for a service appointment. What you do need is proof of ownership. I'll ask for your registration and ID before any work starts.

Q: My 2016 Savana starts fine most of the time but occasionally acts like it doesn't recognize the key. What causes that?

Usually it comes down to one of three things: a worn key blade that's reading inconsistently in the ignition cylinder, a chip that's starting to lose its programming integrity, or a contact issue inside the ignition itself. Intermittent no-start on a transponder key system is worth taking seriously because it tends to get worse before it gets better. The times it starts fine can give you false confidence.

2016 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Sunday morning in Carpinteria. A guy walks out of service into the parking lot near Sandyland Cove and his key won't start the van. Not a dead fob, not a battery issue. The key just sat in the ignition and the engine wouldn't fire. He had people depending on him and nowhere to be in the next hour except somewhere else.

He found me, I was there in about 40 minutes.

The original key was worn enough that the cut was reading inconsistently. On top of that, the transponder wasn't responding the way it should. A new key blank cut to the vehicle and programmed on site fixed both problems at once. I used my equipment at the OBD port, got the new key registered, and tested it through several start cycles before I packed up.

He was back on the road before the hour was up. The dealer option wasn't even open. And when I told him what it cost, he said the dealer had quoted him something much higher the last time he'd asked about a spare. He hadn't gotten around to ordering one.

He has two working keys now.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a GMC dealer take for a key replacement on a 2016 Savana?▼

The actual programming step is not long. A tech with the right GM diagnostic software can get a transponder key registered in a short window once they're at the vehicle. The problem is everything around that step. Full-size vans often end up at the back of the service queue because most dealer work is focused on passenger cars and light trucks.
