2020 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the key programming actually take once you arrive?

For a standard add-a-key on a 2020 Savana where you still have one working key, the job moves fast. The transponder enrollment itself takes a matter of minutes. An all-keys-lost situation takes longer because the security relearn on these GM systems runs through timed wait cycles before it will accept new keys. That process can run 30 minutes or more depending on what the vehicle needs to see. Either way, you are not sitting in a waiting room.

Q: Can you get it done faster than the dealer?

The programming time itself is similar either way. The difference is everything around it. No appointment to schedule, no key ordered and shipped to the dealer, no repair order queue, no waiting for a tech to free up between other jobs. A Savana owner I spoke with had been told "a couple of days" at the dealer just to get the part in. We carry what we need. You get the same result without the wait.

Q: My 2020 Savana starts fine most of the time but occasionally the security light comes on and the engine dies right after cranking. What is going on?

This is one of the more common calls I get on these vans. Intermittent no-start with the security light usually points to a transponder read problem rather than a fully failed key. A few things cause it: the transponder chip inside the key head getting a hairline crack from being dropped, the ignition cylinder collar getting worn so the key wobbles slightly during cranking, or other keys and metal on the ring interfering with the read.

Q: I have a copy of my Savana key cut at a hardware store but it won't start the van. Why?

A hardware store can copy the blade cut, but they cannot program the transponder inside the key head. The 2020 Savana's ignition reads the chip every time you turn the key. If the chip isn't enrolled to that vehicle, the van cranks and dies, or won't start at all. The cut just gets you into the door. The programming is what gets you on the road.

2020 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Ojai's East End, a Savana owner called me on a weekday morning. The van was sitting in her driveway and it wouldn't finish starting. It would crank, catch for a second, then die. Security light was on. She had already tried it three or four times by the time I got there.

She handed me two keys on a heavy ring. Both looked original. I asked her to try one key by itself, nothing else on the ring, and the second attempt started clean and held. The key wasn't the problem. The other metal on the ring was sitting right against the ignition cylinder head and scrambling the transponder read at the worst moment.

I verified the key programming was solid through the OBD port just to be thorough. Both keys were properly enrolled, signal was reading fine on each one individually. No faults once I cleared the leftover codes from the repeated failed starts.

I split the keys onto separate rings before I left. She was driving before 10 a.m. The dealer would have had her schedule a diagnostic appointment, probably run a bill for a full ignition or immobilizer diagnosis, and sent her home without the van. She skipped all of that.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my Savana after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments for GMC vans typically close mid-afternoon and have limited or no weekend hours for key work. If you lose your key on a Friday evening, you are usually looking at Monday before anything happens. I work outside those windows. One call gets you on the schedule, often same evening or first thing the next morning, wherever the van is sitting in Ojai.
