2004 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the key replacement actually take once you show up?

On a 2004 Savana with a mechanical key, it's one of the faster calls I do. If you have the key code from the original documentation or the door tag, cutting is done in minutes. If there's no code available, I decode the lock cylinder on the van and cut from that. Either route, the whole job is typically wrapped up well under 30 minutes at your vehicle.

Q: Can you cut a replacement key faster than the dealer?

For a 2004 Savana, yes - and the gap is bigger than you'd think. The cut itself isn't complicated, but dealers add layers: booking an appointment, pulling the key code through their system, waiting on a parts counter or service writer to get to it. One Savana owner reported being told to leave the van overnight just for a key cut that took a few minutes of actual work. We cut it on site.

Q: I lost my only key and have no key code. Can you still make one without towing the van anywhere?

Yes. This comes up a lot with older vans where the original key code paperwork is long gone. The door lock cylinder on the Savana can be decoded on the vehicle, which gives me the cut data I need without moving the van anywhere. I bring the tools and the blank to you.

Q: My 2004 Savana key turns hard and feels like it's wearing out the lock. Should I be worried about the key copy I had made?

Worth paying attention to. A badly cut copy - especially one made from another copy rather than from the original or the key code - can wear the tumblers faster than normal. On a van this age, the lock cylinders have years of use on them already. If a key feels stiffer than it should or has to be wiggled to turn, get the cut checked.

2004 GMC Savana Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman called me from the Presidio neighborhood in Santa Barbara on a Tuesday morning. She runs a small catering operation out of her 2004 GMC Savana and had lost her only key over the weekend. No spare, no idea where the original key code was, and a full load of equipment locked in the back behind those barn doors.

She'd already called the dealer. They wanted her to tow the van in, look up the key code through GMC's records, and have a blade cut from there. The wait for an appointment was a few days out, and the tow estimate alone made her wince.

I drove out to her in Presidio with my decoding tools and a blank that fits the Savana. The door lock cylinder told me everything I needed. I decoded it right there on the side of the van, cut the key on my mobile unit, and she had a working key in her hand before she finished her second cup of coffee.

No tow. No appointment. No waiting for parts. The dealer comparison came up almost as an afterthought when she asked why she hadn't just done this first.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my 2004 Savana after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments run on their own schedule, and for a key cut on a van this age, some will tell you to come back during regular weekday hours when their key machine operator is in. That's a real problem if your Savana is sitting locked in a parking lot on a Saturday night. We work outside dealer hours. One call and we can get you scheduled, often the same evening or the next morning.
