2009 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2009 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There is a stretch of the Funk Zone where trades guys park their work vans along the side streets while they service the restaurants and tasting rooms nearby. That is exactly where I found this one.

An HVAC technician had been fighting his 2009 GMC Savana for a couple of weeks. The ignition was getting stubborn, taking a few tries before the key would seat and turn cleanly. He figured the key was worn, had a copy made at a hardware store, and the copy made things worse. Then one morning it just would not start. Cranked fine, but the van immediately cut out. He called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and quoted him a number he was not happy about before they had even looked at it.

He called me instead and I drove out.

I checked the ignition cylinder first. The wafers had worn unevenly over fifteen years of daily use, enough to make the key path inconsistent. But the bigger issue was the replacement key. The hardware store copy had the right cut profile but no programmed transponder chip, so the van's immobilizer was killing the engine every single time. Cranks and dies is the giveaway on these.

I decoded the original worn key, cut a fresh replacement matched to the cylinder, and programmed the transponder chip to the van at the OBD port. Then I addressed the cylinder itself, replacing the worn wafers so the new key would seat correctly every time.

He watched the whole thing from a few feet away, asked good questions about how the chip side worked, and seemed genuinely annoyed that the hardware store had sold him false hope on the copy. I do not blame him for trying.

Van started clean on the first turn. He was back on his calls before lunch, and the dealer never saw the vehicle.
