2024 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a "remote" key and what does mine need to work?

Your 2024 Savana uses a remote: a fob with a transponder chip inside and physical buttons on the outside. The buttons handle your wireless lock and unlock functions. The chip handles the security side. When you start the van, the immobilizer reads the chip and verifies it's an enrolled key before allowing the engine to run. Both sides have to work. A fob with dead buttons but a good chip will still start the van.

Q: Why does GMC key programming take so long at the dealer when it's supposed to be a quick procedure?

Scheduling, workflow, and labor billing. The actual key learning procedure on a GM product runs maybe 15 to 20 minutes of tech time. But dealers bill in structured labor increments, write a repair order, and need a certified tech with dealer-level diagnostic equipment available and clocked onto your job. On newer GM vehicles, there's also an authorization layer the dealer's software has to clear before programming begins, which adds a step that can't be rushed.

Q: Can I program a second fob myself if I already have one working key for my Savana?

No. The 2024 Savana doesn't have an onboard self-programming sequence for adding a second fob. That kind of ignition-turn relearn existed on older GM platforms, but it's not available here. Adding any new fob, whether you're starting from one working key or zero, requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to run the key learning procedure through the immobilizer. If you bought a replacement fob online, it still needs to be enrolled before it works.

Q: My Savana fob works on locks but the van won't start. Is the fob bad or is something else wrong?

If the buttons work but the van won't start, the transponder side of the fob is the first thing to look at. The remote functions and the immobilizer functions run independently. A fob can lose its transponder enrollment while still sending a clean signal to the door locks. It can also happen the other way. Before assuming the fob is dead, swap in a fresh CR2032, make sure it's seated flat against both contacts, and try again.

2024 GMC Savana Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Mira Monte, just before 8am, I got a call from a night-shift nurse who had walked out of a long shift to a fob that her van wouldn't recognize. She'd already swapped the CR2032 herself the week before, so she knew it wasn't the battery. The Savana just sat there.

By the time most dealers were unlocking their service bay doors, I was already pulling up to her in the lot.

The original fob had given up. Not the battery, not a pairing glitch. The fob itself was done. I had a replacement on me, confirmed it matched the factory FCC ID her van was registered to, and connected to the OBD port with my diagnostic tool to run the GM key learning procedure. The Savana's immobilizer needs the new fob enrolled to the vehicle before it'll cooperate, and that step is what locks most people into the dealer queue.

It took about 25 minutes on site. I walked every button, tested the locks on both the driver and passenger sides, and confirmed the van started clean before I packed up.

She asked what the dealer would've run her. I told her to call and ask sometime, just for reference. She laughed and said she'd take my word for it.

She drove home before 8:30. No overnight drop-off, no waiting for a tech with the right credentials to open up a slot later in the week.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a GMC dealer actually take for key replacement on a Savana?▼

The programming itself is not the slow part. A tech with the right dealer software can run the key learning procedure in roughly 15 to 20 minutes of actual work. What takes time is everything around that: getting a service appointment, waiting for parts if the fob isn't sitting on the shelf, and getting a certified tech with the specific diagnostic tooling assigned to your job.
