2008 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for the Savana?

Call with your VIN ready. From that I confirm the correct key blank and verify the programming path for your van before I leave for your location. When I arrive, I cut the key to your ignition, enroll the transponder chip so the van's immobilizer recognizes it, and do a cold-start test on site. You're present the whole time. No drop-off, no waiting room, no pickup later.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, registration or title works. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to confirm the key specs before cutting anything. Dealers ask for the same documents before they'll cut from their system, and for good reason. A van is a high-value target and nobody should be cutting keys for one without verifying ownership first. Keep it simple: ID plus registration and you're set.

Q: I have one working key left for my Savana. Should I get a spare now or wait until I actually lose it?

Get the spare now. With one key left, you still have a working key to verify against during programming, which keeps the job clean and fast. If you lose that last key, the job becomes an all-keys-lost situation. That means additional steps to get the van started and the old key erased from the immobilizer's memory before a new one can be enrolled. It takes longer and costs more.

Q: My 2008 Savana starts and then dies a few seconds later. Could it be a key or transponder issue?

That start-then-stall pattern is one of the classic signs the immobilizer didn't fully accept the key. The engine fires on the mechanical fuel in the cylinder, but the security system cuts it back down almost immediately. Check whether a theft or security warning shows on the dash when it happens. If it does, the transponder signal is either not being read or the key isn't enrolled correctly in the system.

2008 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman over near Hope Ranch on a weekday afternoon. She drove a 2008 GMC Savana and needed a spare made before a long trip. The van was sitting in her driveway, she had her registration handy, and she figured it would be simple. She just wanted a backup in case something happened on the road.

What she told me first was that she'd already called the dealer. The service adviser explained there would be a wait for a tech who handles key programming, and the price they gave her was more than she expected for a van she'd owned for years and considered pretty basic transportation.

I showed up with the blank and my programming unit. The Savana's ignition is straightforward to decode, the cut went cleanly, and the transponder enrollment ran without a hitch. She stood in the driveway watching the whole thing, which I don't mind. People like seeing what they're paying for.

I tested the key twice: once to start the engine, once to kill it and restart cold. Both clean. Handed it to her and she did one more start herself just to be sure.

The whole visit was under 40 minutes. She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted, and she didn't have to leave the van anywhere or wait around a service bay.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2008 GMC Savana somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to your vehicle, wherever it is. That matters more with a van than almost any other vehicle, because if you're down to zero working keys, getting a full-size van to a dealer without driving it is a real hassle. Dealers require the vehicle at their service bay for the programming step, and if their key tech isn't available that day, you may be waiting.
