2015 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the key programming actually take once you're at my van?

On a 2015 Savana where you still have one working key, the onboard relearn is quick. We're talking a few minutes of actual work once I'm set up at the vehicle. All-keys-lost is longer. The security system has a timed relearn sequence built in, and you can't rush it. That adds time, but it's the procedure, not the tech being slow.

Q: Can you get my Savana key made faster than the dealer?

The programming itself takes about the same amount of time no matter who does it. The difference is everything around it. No appointment, no waiting for a technician to free up, no parts order if I already have the right key blank in the van. One Savana owner posted that the dealer quoted him a two-hour window for a job that was thirty minutes of real work. That gap is dealership overhead, not the job itself.

Q: My Savana cranks fine but won't start, and the security light is on. Is this a key issue?

That's one of the more common signs that the immobilizer isn't reading the transponder chip in the key correctly. The engine cranks because the starter and battery are fine, but the security system is blocking fuel or spark as a theft deterrent response. First thing to check: is this a key that's been on a heavy key ring, or has the key head been bent, twisted, or dropped hard?

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Can I program it myself?

If you still have one working key, there's an onboard add-a-key procedure on the Savana that doesn't need a scan tool. It uses your existing working key as part of the process. The catch: it has to be a properly chipped key blank that's been cut to your van first. A blank you bought online may or may not have the right transponder inside, and if it's wrong, the relearn won't take no matter how many times you try.

2015 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out on Via Real Corridor in Carpinteria, I got a call from a guy running a small landscaping crew out of his 2015 Savana. He had one key left. The other one had gone missing somewhere between a job site and a gas station, and he'd been white-knuckling it on a single key for about three weeks.

He knew what was at stake. One key failing on a Monday morning means the crew stands around, jobs get pushed, and clients start calling. He wasn't panicked yet, but he was close.

He didn't have time to drive anywhere and wait. The van was his office, his tool storage, and the thing that kept the whole week moving. Leaving it at a dealer wasn't a conversation he wanted to have.

I came to him. Decoded the existing key, cut a new key to match, and ran the add-a-key relearn using his one working key already in hand. The whole thing was done at the van, in the corridor, while he sorted his schedule for the afternoon.

He had a backup key in his hand before lunch. He mentioned the dealer quoted him something that made him wince. With me, he saved a good chunk of that and didn't lose a single work hour.

The crew had no idea anything happened. They were just wondering why he looked less stressed than usual.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Savana key made after hours or on a weekend?▼

GMC dealer service departments typically close mid-afternoon and have narrow weekend windows. For a work van like the Savana, that's a real problem. A key failure on a Friday afternoon can mean the van sits until Monday, and that's not a hypothetical. I've heard from owners who were told exactly that. I work outside dealer hours. One call and we figure out a time that works, whether that's an evening, a Saturday morning, or whatever fits your schedule.
