2012 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow the van to the dealer for a new key?

No. Dealers will often default to telling you to bring the vehicle in, which on a full-size work van usually means a flatbed and a wait that can stretch into multiple days depending on their tech availability. We come to the vehicle. Whether it is sitting in a driveway off the main strip in Downtown Carpinteria or in a parking lot nearby, we do the cut and the programming on site. The van does not move until you drive it.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. We also pull the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb to confirm the vehicle before we do anything. Same standard a dealer would use, just handled on site in a few minutes rather than at a service counter.

Q: My Savana cranks but won't start. Could it be the key?

It could be. On this van, the transponder chip in the key has to be recognized by the immobilizer before the engine will run. If the chip has failed, if the key was cut from a blank that was never properly programmed, or if the key was copied at a hardware store that only duplicated the cut and ignored the chip, you get exactly that symptom: engine cranks, nothing fires, security light may stay on or flash.

Q: Can I get a spare key made before I lose the only one I have?

Yes, and it is worth doing while you still have a working key. Adding a second key to a vehicle that already has one is a simpler job than an all-keys-lost situation. We cut a new blade to match, program the transponder chip to the van, and you leave with a backup that actually starts the engine. A lot of Savana owners who use the van for work put this off until the original key breaks or goes missing.

2012 GMC Savana Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She runs a mobile dog grooming setup out of Downtown Carpinteria. The Savana is her whole business, cargo space packed with a tub, a dryer, the works. She called me because her key shell had cracked along the head, and the blade was threatening to snap off at the base. Not a lockout yet, but close.

She had already called the dealer. They told her she needed a complete new key, cut and programmed. She was looking at a wait for a parts order and a trip across town to sit in a service waiting room while they did it.

I pulled up to her driveway off the main stretch in Downtown Carpinteria. She handed me the cracked key. The blade was still intact, just loose where the plastic had given way around the collar. The transponder chip inside was reading fine on my tester. Nothing wrong with the electronics at all.

I transferred the chip into a fresh key head, cut a new blade to match her ignition, and programmed it to the van right there on the street. Cranked clean on the first try. The whole job took about twenty-five minutes.

She kept the old cracked shell as a backup blank in case she ever needs a second key made. Smart.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call us and we come to wherever the Savana is sitting in the Carpinteria area. We carry the blanks and the programming equipment to handle this van on site, so there is no tow, no appointment, and no waiting until a dealer has an opening. Lockouts on full-size vans are something we handle regularly. If the keys are inside or the only key is broken, we get you back in and get a working key made before we leave.
