2001 GMC Savana
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does it actually take to get a replacement key made on site?

On a 2001 Savana, faster than most people expect. If you have a working key to copy, it's just a cut. A few minutes. If there's no key at all, I decode the lock or pull the key code and cut from that. Add a few extra minutes for the decode step and you're still looking at well under a half hour for the whole job, start to finish, at your vehicle. No waiting room. No repair order.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer for a van this age?

Yes, by a wide margin, and for a simpler reason than you'd think. A dealer has to write up a repair order, find a tech, source a blank from their parts inventory, and fit it into the shop schedule. For a 2001 Savana with a basic metal key, that overhead can turn a ten-minute job into a half-day visit. I show up with blanks already in the van and cut on site.

Q: I have no key at all. Can you still make one without towing the van anywhere?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2001 Savana is a bread-and-butter job for a mobile locksmith. A few options depending on what's accessible. If the vehicle identification number is available, a key code can sometimes be retrieved through the proper channels. Otherwise I can decode the cut directly from the door lock or the ignition cylinder. Either way, the van stays parked exactly where it is. No tow, no dealer drop-off, no leaving it overnight.

Q: My key turns but the ignition feels stiff and grindy. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

Probably the cylinder. On vans this age, the ignition wafers wear down over years of use and grit. A worn cylinder can start refusing even the correct key, or it'll turn but feel rough the whole way. Sometimes a freshly cut key on a clean blank will feel noticeably smoother than a worn original because the cuts are crisp again. But if the cylinder itself is past the point of cooperating, cutting a new key won't fix the binding.

2001 GMC Savana Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Poinsettia, I got a call from a guy who runs a small landscaping crew. His 2001 GMC Savana cargo van was parked right on the street, tools in the back, and the last key he had snapped off in the door lock. He didn't lose it. He didn't leave it somewhere. It just broke clean, and half of it was still sitting in the cylinder.

He'd called a big-name shop first and they told him they'd need to order a blank and come back the next day. That wasn't going to work. His crew was standing around with nothing to do.

I got there with my kit, extracted the broken piece from the door lock without damaging the cylinder, and decoded the cut right off the lock wafers. Cut two new keys on site. The whole thing took under 40 minutes including the extraction.

He had both keys in hand before his crew finished their water break. The dealer comparison didn't even come up. He just needed someone who showed up with the right tools and didn't make a same-day job into a two-day ordeal.

GMC Savana Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my 2001 Savana after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments run on limited hours and most won't cut a key after mid-afternoon or on a Sunday. If your van is your livelihood and it's sitting dead on a Saturday night, waiting until Monday morning is a real problem. Because the 2001 Savana uses a standard metal key with no programming involved, there's no reason to be tied to dealer hours. I carry the right blanks and cutting equipment in the van.
