1996 Kia Sportage
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: The dealer told me to tow it in. Do I actually have to do that?

Not for a key issue on this vehicle. Dealers default to "tow it in" because their process runs through a service bay. That means tow fees before anyone even looks at the car, a check-in queue, and however long it sits before a tech gets to it. On a 1996 Sportage, the key work doesn't require a shop lift or a diagnostic station.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or the title. I verify the VIN from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm the vehicle before I cut anything. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, just done on site in a few minutes instead of at a service counter after a tow.

Q: I only have one key for my 1996 Sportage. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need one?

Get it now. This is one of those cases where the math is obvious. If you still have the original key in hand, making a copy is quick and inexpensive. If that one key breaks, gets lost, or stays stuck in a lock, you're looking at a lockout job instead of a simple copy job. Those are two different calls with two different costs. One working key is a vulnerability on any vehicle.

Q: My key is worn and starting to slip in the ignition. Can you cut me a new one from scratch without the original?

Yes. If the key is too worn to copy cleanly, I can decode the lock cylinder directly and cut a fresh key to the correct specification. Worn keys on older vehicles are common, and cutting from a worn copy just passes the problem forward. Decoding from the lock gives a clean cut.

1996 Kia Sportage Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A young couple in Rancho Conejo had just bought a used 1996 Sportage from a private seller. Good rig, fair price, one key. The seller said a spare would be simple. They called the Kia dealer and got a number that made them wince. They had just stretched their budget on the down payment and first month of insurance, so the dealer quote stung.

They found me online and asked if the dealer number sounded right. I told them it wasn't out of nowhere, but they were paying for a service counter, a waiting room, and a parts department that orders from a catalog. I work from a van.

I met them at the driveway before they even drove the car home. I read the existing key's cut with my decoder, matched it to the correct blank for the Sportage, and ran a copy on the cutter right there on the hood. Tested it in the ignition and both door locks. Handed it over. Start to finish, maybe fifteen minutes.

They drove home with two working keys. The dealer quote never came up again, except when they mentioned it to say how much they saved.

Kia Sportage Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare. Can you come to me in Thousand Oaks?▼

Yes. Call me and I'll head straight to wherever you and the Sportage are in Thousand Oaks, including the Rancho Conejo area. I carry the decoding tools and the right blanks for this vehicle in the van. You don't need a tow, you don't need a ride to a dealer, and you don't need to wait around for roadside assistance that may only end in a tow anyway.
