Guy near the California Oil Museum in Santa Paula flagged me down on a Sunday. Well, not flagged. He texted. He was an auto parts vendor wrapping up at the swap meet, and his 2013 Kia Sportage EX would not start.
He sells aftermarket parts for a living. Headlights, grilles, mirror caps. But when his smart key died, he assumed it was a dealer-only fix. Some forum post from 2014 told him Kia locked the immobilizer programming behind KDS, their dealer diagnostic system. That was true back then. It is not true now.
I met him at the lot. His SY5HMFNA04 fob, part number 95440-3N250, had a swollen CR2032 that leaked just enough to corrode one of the battery terminals inside the fob housing. The board still worked. I cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and tested proximity detection at all four doors and the hatch.
Then the real job. He also needed a spare, so I generated a new ID46 transponder profile through VVDI, pulled his immobilizer PIN through the OBD-II port, and registered the second smart key to the SMARTRA3 module. Lock, unlock, panic, hatch release. Start, stop, start again.
He stood there holding the two fobs like he was comparing them for weight. Both worked. His car did not care whether it was programmed in a dealer service bay or a gravel parking lot next to a swap meet.
Whole thing took less time than his drive to the nearest Kia dealer would have.
