1999 Kia Sportage
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Kia to the dealer to get a key made?

Not for this one. Dealers sometimes make it sound like key work always requires the car on their lot. For a 1999 Sportage with a mechanical key, that is not the case. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment comes to the vehicle, decodes or cuts the key on site, and you drive away. Towing alone adds real cost before the dealer even looks at anything.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you make a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership. Registration or title works. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on your Sportage and confirm it matches your paperwork before I cut anything. That is standard practice for any locksmith or dealer. The difference is I do it at your location in a few minutes, not after you have already arranged a tow.

Q: My key turns but the engine cranks and won't catch. Is that a key problem?

On a 1999 Sportage with a mechanical key, a no-start where the engine cranks is almost never the key itself. The key's only job is turning the cylinder. If it does that, the key has done its part. Look elsewhere first: fuel delivery, the distributor, spark, or a sensor issue are far more common culprits on these. The ignition switch itself can also wear out on higher-mileage examples, which is a different repair from a key cut.

Q: My Sportage has two doors that use the same key as the ignition. If I need a new key cut, will it work in all the locks?

Yes, as long as all your locks are still on the original cylinders. The 1999 Sportage uses the same key profile across ignition, door, and often the glovebox. One correctly cut key opens everything. Where this gets complicated is on high-mileage trucks where someone replaced a door lock cylinder at some point without rekeying it to match. If that happened on yours, one of the locks will be on a different cut.

1999 Kia Sportage Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked off Doubletree Road near the Lynn Ranch area of Thousand Oaks. His 1999 Kia Sportage, his daily driver, his one key. He'd had it so long the bow was shiny and the cuts were soft from years of use. It finally stopped turning cleanly that morning, and then it didn't turn at all.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in. He asked about a timeline. They said a few days minimum, depending on parts. He hadn't called a tow truck yet, which was smart.

I pulled up, decoded the worn key, and cut a fresh replacement right there in the driveway. No port to plug into, no software to run, no countdown timer. The new key went in, turned smoothly, and the Sportage fired up on the first try.

He held the old key next to the new one and you could see why it had failed. The cuts were almost rounded off. It had been on borrowed time for months.

He paid a fraction of what the dealer would have charged, and he never needed a tow.

Kia Sportage Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. I come directly to wherever you are in Thousand Oaks, including out in the Lynn Ranch area. I carry the blanks and cutting equipment to handle this on site. For a 1999 Sportage, there is no programming step to wait on. Once I decode the lock or work from the key code tied to your VIN, I cut the replacement and you are done. No tow, no dealer visit, no sitting in a waiting room.
