Isla Vista gets a lot of street parking on steep narrow roads, and that's exactly where this job landed. A graphic designer called because his 2011 Sportage was parked on a tight one-lane hill with no room to turn a tow truck around. The dealer told him he'd need to get the car out first. He didn't have a working key. That's a circle with no exit.
I parked at the bottom and walked up with my bag. He had one fob that had stopped being recognized, and no backup. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time he tried to start it. Fob felt fine in the hand, buttons still clicked, but the car had stopped talking to it.
I checked the fob first. The CR2032 wasn't dead by voltage, but the positive contact inside the housing had a thin layer of oxidation on it. Cleaned that, reseated the battery, and the fob woke right back up. Car recognized it immediately.
But since I was already there and he had no backup key at all, we went ahead and added a second fob so he'd have one going forward. That part did need the diagnostic tool to register the new fob to the immobilizer, and we tested every button on both fobs before I walked back down the hill.
His car never moved. The dealer quote he'd gotten assumed he needed a full key replacement and a tow. He needed neither.
