A home health aide in Ojai, over near the Ojai Valley Trail, called about her 2004 Sportage. She said the key still turned but the car would crank and then die almost immediately. Immobilizer light on the dash staying lit. Classic chip read failure.
She had already been to the dealer. They told her they'd need to order a new key and it could take five to seven business days. She couldn't wait that long. She drives to patients' homes every day and the schedule doesn't have gaps.
I met her at her driveway with my Lishi KIA3 pick/decoder and a blank with a fresh ID46 chip ready to go. Her original key's blade was worn pretty thin on the high cuts, which explained why it had started feeling sloppy in the ignition over the past year. The transponder inside was intermittent, reading sometimes, failing others. That's the worst kind of problem because it makes you doubt everything else.
Cut a new blade off the decoder read, cloned the ID46 chip to the fresh blank, and tested it cold. Cranked, held, ran. Immobilizer light went out the way it should. Then I tested it three more times because intermittent failures deserve intermittent paranoia.
She watched the whole thing from her porch. Took maybe twenty minutes. She kept the original as a backup around the house and took the new one to work that afternoon.
