1997 Kia Sportage
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is the key on a 1997 Kia Sportage?

It's a metal key, full stop. No remote, no fob, no buttons. You put it in the ignition and turn it, and you use it in the door lock the same way. Replacement is a matter of cutting the correct blank to match your vehicle's cuts. A locksmith can do that by decoding a worn original or by pulling the key code if it's on file.

Q: How long does the dealer process take for a key on a vehicle this old?

It varies, and not always in your favor. On a 1997 model, the dealer may need to look up whether they can still source the correct blank, and some Kia dealers will tell you upfront they don't stock blanks for vehicles that far back. That can mean delays while they locate the part, plus a standard service scheduling backlog on top of that.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition. Do I need a new key or is something wrong with the cylinder?

Could be both, and on a 1997 Sportage, it's worth sorting out which one is the problem before spending money on either. A worn key blade can round off the cuts gradually, and the ignition cylinder wears along with it over decades of use. Sometimes a freshly cut key to the correct depth solves the stiffness entirely because the cylinder is still good underneath. Other times the cylinder itself is the issue, separate from the key.

Q: I only have one key for this Sportage. Should I get a spare cut now?

Yes, while you still have the original. A working key can be decoded and duplicated quickly. If the original wears out or gets lost before you make a copy, the job gets a little more involved since the lock or ignition cylinder has to be decoded directly instead. Get the spare made now and it's a fast, simple job.

1997 Kia Sportage Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman over in North Ranch, Thousand Oaks. She'd had her 1997 Sportage since forever and the key had been through it.

The bow was cracked, the blade was worn thin at the tip, and she was wiggling it in the ignition every morning just to get it to turn. Her neighbor told her to go to the dealer. The dealer told her they'd have to look up whether they could even source a blank for a vehicle that old, and she'd need to leave it with them.

She called me instead.

I came out to her driveway with the right blank for that Sportage. The worn original still had enough of a pattern left to decode on the spot. I cut a fresh key to spec and tested it in the ignition, the driver door, and the rear. Turned clean every time. No wiggling, no coaxing.

She held the new key and the old one side by side and could see the difference right away. The worn blade had rounded off on two of the cuts. She'd been fighting that for months.

The whole thing was done in one visit. No appointment, no tow, no waiting on a parts order.

Kia Sportage Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to a Kia dealer to get a replacement key for a 1997 Sportage?▼

No. A mobile locksmith can cut a replacement key for your 1997 Sportage right at your location. This is a metal key job, meaning it comes down to having the correct blank and the ability to cut it to your vehicle, either from the key code or by decoding a working key or the lock itself. No dealer appointment, no tow, no waiting on a parts order.
