I got a call on a Saturday evening from someone staying up in the Santa Susana Knolls area of Simi Valley. He was renting a cabin for the weekend, had his 1999 Legacy parked in the driveway, and his key fob had stopped responding entirely. The car started fine, but he couldn't get the remote to do anything.
He'd already called the dealer. They told him to bring it in Monday, and there was going to be a wait. He found me online about an hour later.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob. CR2025 inside was the original, no telling how old. I popped it, cleaned the contacts, and dropped in a fresh battery. Nothing. The fob itself had a hairline crack along the back housing that was letting just enough flex in to misalign the board when you pressed the buttons.
I had the correct replacement shell in the van. Transferred the board over, seated a new CR2025, and we were back. Lock, unlock, all four buttons working. Tested from across the driveway and he had solid range again.
He mentioned the dealer quote involved towing since he'd assumed the car wasn't drivable. It was perfectly drivable. He just needed a fob fix in a parking spot, done same evening, for a fraction of what they had quoted him.
