I got a call from an alignment shop off Saviers Road in Oxnard, over near the Lemonwood side of town. The owner of a 2016 Legacy was already there for a routine visit when the whole key situation unraveled.
Another locksmith had come out before me. He attempted to program a replacement smart key, the shop's battery charger wasn't keeping up, voltage dropped mid-sequence, and the immobilizer went into a fault state. The locksmith packed his tools and left. The alignment shop guys didn't know who else to call, so they called me.
When I got there, the car wouldn't respond to the new fob, wouldn't respond to the old one either, and the push-button start was dark. The module had logged faults from the interrupted handshake and was sitting in a lockout condition.
I put my jump pack on the battery first, not to jump-start anything, just to hold voltage rock-solid while I worked. Then I connected my diagnostic equipment, cleared the fault codes, and waited for the module to reset completely before I touched anything related to key programming. Rushing that step is what gets people in trouble.
Once the module came back clean, I ran the smart key registration sequence from scratch. The new fob paired on the first attempt. I walked every button, tested the door handle sensors on both sides, and confirmed the start button was reading the fob at normal distance.
Total time was about an hour and a half. The customer had already called the dealer while he was waiting. Multi-day turnaround, flatbed required, and the quote was a number that made him wince. He paid way less coming through me, and he drove home that same afternoon.
The job wasn't hard once I stabilized the conditions. The first locksmith just didn't control the environment before starting.
