2016 Subaru Legacy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular car key?

Your 2016 Legacy uses a proximity-style smart key. The fob communicates with antennas built into the vehicle, and when it recognizes an authorized fob nearby, it lets you use the push-button start and the touch-sensitive door handles. There's also a transponder chip inside the fob that the vehicle reads at close range as a secondary verification when you start the car. The four buttons on the fob handle remote functions independently of the ignition system.

Q: What equipment do you actually use to program a 2016 Subaru Legacy smart key?

For the Legacy smart key, I use professional immobilizer programming equipment that communicates with the body and security modules through the OBD port. On complicated jobs, like an all-keys-lost situation or a module that's been faulted by a previous bad attempt, I have bench-capable equipment as a backup option so I'm not limited to what the car will cooperate with in its current state.

Q: My 2016 Legacy shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What else could cause that?

A few things, and the fob is not always the problem. The keyless entry antennas are positioned at multiple points around the cabin and near the door handles. If one antenna has a wiring issue or a connector that's worked loose, you'll get inconsistent detection that looks exactly like a dying fob. The giveaway is that the warning appears in some spots but not others, or one door handle wakes the car and another doesn't.

Q: Can I program a second smart key for my Legacy myself at home?

No. There's no onboard button sequence or ignition-turn trick for adding a smart key on this system. Programming requires diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle. That applies whether you're adding a spare or replacing a lost fob.

2016 Subaru Legacy Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from an alignment shop off Saviers Road in Oxnard, over near the Lemonwood side of town. The owner of a 2016 Legacy was already there for a routine visit when the whole key situation unraveled.

Another locksmith had come out before me. He attempted to program a replacement smart key, the shop's battery charger wasn't keeping up, voltage dropped mid-sequence, and the immobilizer went into a fault state. The locksmith packed his tools and left. The alignment shop guys didn't know who else to call, so they called me.

When I got there, the car wouldn't respond to the new fob, wouldn't respond to the old one either, and the push-button start was dark. The module had logged faults from the interrupted handshake and was sitting in a lockout condition.

I put my jump pack on the battery first, not to jump-start anything, just to hold voltage rock-solid while I worked. Then I connected my diagnostic equipment, cleared the fault codes, and waited for the module to reset completely before I touched anything related to key programming. Rushing that step is what gets people in trouble.

Once the module came back clean, I ran the smart key registration sequence from scratch. The new fob paired on the first attempt. I walked every button, tested the door handle sensors on both sides, and confirmed the start button was reading the fob at normal distance.

Total time was about an hour and a half. The customer had already called the dealer while he was waiting. Multi-day turnaround, flatbed required, and the quote was a number that made him wince. He paid way less coming through me, and he drove home that same afternoon.

The job wasn't hard once I stabilized the conditions. The first locksmith just didn't control the environment before starting.

Subaru Legacy Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things. First, find a real business name with a fixed address and actual Google or Yelp reviews that mention specific vehicles and jobs, not generic five-star filler. Scam operations run dozens of different names that all route to the same call center with no real location. Second, ask for a specific phone quote on your 2016 Legacy.
