Got a call from a guy near Oxnard Auto Center who was stuck at a body shop picking up his 2004 Legacy after fender work. He had one key left, the plastic housing was cracked in half, and the transponder chip was loose inside. The blade still turned the ignition, but the car would crank and immediately die. I walked over from where I parked on Auto Center Drive. Pulled his old key apart on the hood and confirmed the 4D-62 chip was intact, just rattling around loose. I cloned that chip data onto a fresh transponder using my VVDI2, cut a new DAT17 blade decoded from the existing key, and housed it in a new shell. Then I paired a replacement NHVWB1U711 remote, fresh CR2025 in it, and tested all four buttons against the driver door, the trunk, and the panic.
He sat on the bumper of his car and watched the whole thing. When the engine caught and held on the first turn, he just nodded like he had been waiting all day. He had.
