A bartender called me around 3:30 in the afternoon from a brewery taproom lot near Tierra Rejada Open Space in Moorpark. His shift started at four. The Legacy sat there doing nothing when he hit the push button, just the amber indicator blinking and "Push Button Start Malfunction" staring back at him. He'd already tried holding the fob right up to the start button. Nothing.
His bar manager was texting him. That part he mentioned twice.
I keep the van stocked for Subaru smart key work, so I was in the lot within about 20 minutes. Popped the door with my DAT17 Lishi, plugged into the OBD port, and pulled the fob apart on his hood. The CR2032 was dead flat, voltage barely registering. But a dead battery alone doesn't usually throw that start malfunction message. The immobilizer had logged a communication fault with the key's G-chip transponder, and the proximity module needed a handshake reset.
Fresh CR2032 seated, cleared the fault through the diagnostics, re-registered the HYQ14AHC. Walked the doors, tested lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Hit the start button. Engine turned over clean.
Hands-on time was maybe 20 minutes. He clocked in five minutes late, which I'm told the manager got over by the second round of pours. A dealer would have meant a tow, a wait measured in days, and a missed shift on top of a way bigger bill.
