2017 Subaru Legacy Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already somewhere in Moorpark when the call came in. Guy over in Mountain Meadows, standing next to his 2017 Legacy in his own driveway, push-button start showing a key warning on the dash. Shift started in under an hour. He'd already tried the fob against the start button the way the manual describes for a low-battery situation. Nothing.

When I pulled up he had the fob in his hand and that look people get when they've been troubleshooting something for twenty minutes and it's only gotten more confusing.

I popped the fob open right there on the hood. CR2032 looked fine visually, but I checked the contact clips anyway. One of them had a slight outward bow - barely visible - and the battery wasn't making full contact. I straightened the clip, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, and snapped it shut.

That alone didn't fully fix it. The vehicle security system had logged the repeated failed start attempts and the fob still wasn't pairing cleanly. Plugged in through the OBD port, re-registered the fob to the immobilizer, cleared the stored fault. Walked every function: lock, unlock, the other two buttons, proximity detection at the door handle, and most importantly a clean push-button start with the engine idling before I handed anything back.

Total time on site was about 25 minutes. He made his shift. The dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get an appointment, plus the tow his insurance would have covered only partially.

I didn't bring that up. He did.
