A guy from La Colonia flagged me down in a parking lot near the auto parts store one morning. He had a 2015 Subaru Legacy and a problem: the fob was doing nothing. No lock, no unlock, doors not responding to the handle touch, and the dash throwing a key-not-detected warning every time he got close.
He had already bought a CR2032 at the parts store. Fresh battery, same problem. He assumed the fob was dead and had already been told by someone that he'd need to go to the dealer.
I popped the fob open on the hood. The new battery was in there, but one of the contact clips had a slight outward bow from being pried open, so the cell wasn't making a solid connection. I cleaned the contacts, straightened the clip, and reseated the battery correctly. Then I went through every function: lock, unlock, door handle touch unlock on both front doors, and the remaining buttons. Everything came back.
That was the whole job. He did not need a new fob, and he definitely did not need a dealer appointment with a multi-day wait. He just needed someone who would actually look at what was wrong before selling him something.
The dealer comparison came up on its own when he asked what a replacement fob would have cost him. I told him to call me if he ever actually needed one.
