2011 Subaru Legacy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Mussel Shoals?

Typically within 30 minutes, depending on where you are in the Ventura area and current traffic. When you call, I confirm the key details for your Legacy right then so I'm loading the correct blanks and tools before I leave. No guessing on arrival. Subaru owners going the dealer route regularly report waiting days just for the fob to arrive by VIN order before any programming even gets scheduled.

Q: Can I get a key made today?

Yes. I carry the blanks and programming equipment for the 2011 Legacy on every service call. Nothing to order, no appointment for next week, no waiting on a part to ship. Dealers often have to order fobs by VIN, and owners on Subaru forums confirm multi-day waits are common before the key even arrives at the dealer location. Then there's a separate appointment to actually program it. I skip all of that.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my 2011 Legacy?

Sometimes, but it depends on what you bought. The 2011 Legacy remote head key has a transponder inside the head, and that chip has to match what the car's immobilizer expects. A lot of the cheap fobs floating around online use off-spec components or housings with poorly seated transponder placement. I've seen cars that read the remote functions fine but throw a fit on the transponder side because the chip isn't sitting where the antenna coil expects it.

Q: My 2011 Legacy starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On a remote head key, the transponder and the remote are in the same housing but they work independently. If the car starts, the transponder side is fine. First move: swap the CR2032. These drain faster than people expect, especially if the fob has been sitting in a hot car. Weak battery will drop the remote range before it kills it completely.

2011 Subaru Legacy Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Mussel Shoals, the streets that run up from the water can get tight in a hurry. A graphic novelist called me because his 2011 Legacy was parked on a narrow one-lane residential stretch where a tow truck couldn't turn around. The dealer's answer was to get the car out first. He had no key. That was the whole problem.

I parked at the bottom and walked up with my bag.

The original key was gone. All-keys-lost on a Legacy like this means the immobilizer needs to be cleared before it will accept anything new, and that reset has a timed wait baked in. I ran the reset through the diagnostic port, let the countdown do its thing, then programmed a fresh key to the car on the spot. Cut the blade to match the lock, tested the transponder in the ignition, ran through all four buttons on the fob.

The car never moved. He didn't need a tow, didn't need a dealer appointment, didn't need to wait for a part to arrive by VIN order. He had a working key before I walked back down the hill. The dealer quote he'd gotten was well over double what he paid me.

Subaru Legacy Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2011 Subaru Legacy key replacement take?▼

Depends on whether you have a working key or not. If you have at least one key that starts the car, adding a spare is a quicker job. Once I'm connected and the car is ready to learn, the actual programming window moves fast. Full visit is usually under an hour. All-keys-lost is a different story. The immobilizer on this generation has a mandatory timed reset before it will accept new key data.
