A couple near San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura came out of a sushi place on a Saturday night and their 2013 Subaru Legacy wouldn't start. The remote head key was completely dead. No lock chirp, no unlock, nothing.
Neither of them knew about the backup procedure. On these, you can hold the dead fob right up against the push-button start or, since theirs was a turn-key ignition, just insert and turn. The immobilizer chip is passive, powered by the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder, so a dead CR2032 doesn't actually stop you from starting the car. They didn't know that. They were about to leave it overnight and deal with it Monday.
I was 15 minutes out. I carry DAT17 blanks, 4D60 chips, CR2032 cells, and aftermarket CWTWB1U811 housings in labeled drawers behind my seat. Popped their fob open on the hood, swapped in a fresh CR2032, and reprogrammed the remote functions with my VVDI Key Tool. Range came back immediately. Car started on the first turn.
The whole thing took less time than their dinner did. They drove home that night instead of calling a cab and waiting until Monday for a dealer appointment. When the van is stocked right, a call at 9pm on a Saturday plays out the same as 9am on a Tuesday.
