Got a call from a guy over in Centennial Plaza, Oxnard. His 2000 Legacy wouldn't start. Key turned, dash lights came on, fuel pump didn't prime, starter did nothing. Classic immobilizer lockout. The green key light on the instrument cluster was blinking fast instead of going solid, which on these third-gen Legacys means the body integrated module isn't seeing the transponder chip.
He'd been using this key for years. Worn down, cracked plastic, the transponder glass capsule was barely sitting in the head anymore. You could hear it rattle.
I pulled the 4D60 chip out of his old key, confirmed it still read on my IM608, and transferred it into a new blade blank cut to his door. Programmed a fresh NHVWB1U711 remote while I was at it because his old one had a corroded CR2025 that leaked onto the board contacts. Cleaned the battery terminals inside the fob housing and tested all four buttons from about 30 feet out.
The part that made the job was watching him turn the key and just sit there for a second after the engine caught. Like he'd forgotten what normal felt like. He told me the dealer quoted him a wait of several days and wanted the car towed in. He almost did it.
Whole thing took me about 25 minutes in the parking lot. He kept his original immobilizer code, got a working remote back, and saved a good chunk over the dealer route.
