2000 Subaru Legacy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Does the dealer have to program the remote, or can anyone do it?

On this generation Legacy, remotes can be programmed through an onboard sequence without a dealer scan tool. That's one of the advantages of this era of Subaru. The sequence involves the ignition and the existing working remote to put the car into programming mode, then the new remote gets registered.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove I own the vehicle?

Photo ID and proof of ownership, same as the dealer requires. Registration or title works. I verify the VIN from the dash plate or door jamb against your documents before any work starts. That's standard practice for any locksmith doing key work, and it protects you as much as it protects anyone else. The whole verification step takes a few minutes on site, not a form submission or a callback the next business day.

Q: My 2000 Legacy remote works sometimes and not others. Is the fob failing or is it the car's receiver?

Intermittent range on this generation is almost always the fob before it's the receiver. The most common culprits in order: weak battery contact rather than a dead battery, a cracked solder joint on the transmitter board inside the fob from being dropped, or the rubber button pad wearing thin and not making clean contact with the circuit underneath. The receiver in the car failing outright is possible but genuinely uncommon on these.

Q: Can I buy a replacement remote online and program it myself?

Possibly, depending on your situation. This generation Legacy has an owner-accessible remote programming sequence, so if you still have at least one working remote, adding a second one can be done without a technician. The replacement fob needs to match the factory specifications for this vehicle, meaning the correct frequency and button configuration. A fob that looks similar but isn't the right match for this car won't pair regardless of what you do.

2000 Subaru Legacy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Five Points called me about a 2000 Legacy remote that had stopped working at range. It used to click the locks from across a parking lot. Now he had to be practically on top of the car.

He'd already swapped the battery, which was the right first move. Still sluggish. He figured the fob itself was dying and wanted a replacement.

I came out to him. Before touching anything, I checked the battery seating first. CR2025, correct type, but the contact was barely kissing the cell. A little debris had gotten in under the positive contact and lifted it just enough. Cleaned it out, reseated the battery with real pressure, tested from about thirty feet across the lot.

Full range came back.

He did not need a replacement fob at all. He needed someone to look at the thing properly instead of just swapping a part and calling it done. That part took maybe four minutes. The rest of the time we spent confirming all four buttons were reading correctly.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a replacement fob plus programming time. He would have paid for parts and labor he didn't need. Coming out to him in Five Points instead cost him a fraction of that.

Subaru Legacy Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me in Five Points?▼

Yes. Come to you is the whole point. Call me and I'll come directly to wherever the Legacy is sitting in Five Points or anywhere else in Oxnard. I carry the blanks and programming equipment for this vehicle, so there's no reason to arrange a tow or wait on roadside assistance. One owner I spoke with had been waiting over five hours on a roadside callback before he gave up and went another route. Mobile service skips all of that.
