It was a Tuesday in July, and a woman called me from a Montecito parking lot near Hot Springs. She had a full Costco run in the back of her 2021 Legacy and her fob had gone completely dark. Car locked, groceries starting to sweat, and the dealer's earliest opening was the following afternoon.

That part needed the diagnostic port and the right software to re-enroll the fob to the vehicle security system.
I ran the re-enrollment at the OBD port, walked every function on all four buttons, confirmed the car started cleanly, and had her on her way in well under an hour. The groceries made it. She told me the dealer had quoted her a wait and a price that made her stomach drop almost as fast as the fob did.
