1998 Toyota Camry
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 1998 Camry?

A properly cut key on this generation Camry should last years with normal use. These are simple metal keys with no electronics to fail. The main wear point is the blade itself, which can thin out over many thousands of ignition cycles on a high-use vehicle, or develop small burrs if the cylinder is worn. If you start feeling resistance in the ignition or the key gets harder to turn, that is usually the cylinder wearing, not the key itself.

Q: What if the new key has a problem after a few weeks?

Call me. If the key I cut is not working right, I come back and sort it. On a mechanical key job like this, the two things that can go wrong after the fact are a cut that was slightly off, or a blank that did not hold the cut under use. Both are fixable. I test fit and cycle every key before I leave the job, but if something comes up later, it is covered.

Q: My 1998 Camry ignition is stiff and sometimes the key will not turn at all. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

This is one of the most common complaints on this generation Camry. The ignition cylinders on these wear in a specific way: the wafers inside get fatigued over time and start binding, especially if the key has any wear on it. Sometimes a freshly cut key to the original code will free up a stiff cylinder because it fits the wafers more precisely than your worn original does. That is worth trying first.

Q: I lost both keys to my 1998 Camry. Can you make a key without any working key to copy from?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 98 Camry is actually one of the cleaner versions of that job. Because this is a mechanical key, I decode the cut directly from the lock, either the door lock or the ignition cylinder, and cut a new key from that reading. No original key needed. No tow, no dealer visit, no waiting for a key to be ordered. I show up, read the lock, cut the key, and you are driving.

1998 Toyota Camry Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was early, maybe 6:15 in the morning, when I got the call from a guy parked at the supply store off the Wood Ranch side of Simi Valley. He had snapped his key in the ignition trying to force a sticky cylinder. The broken half was still in there. His shift had already started.

I was in the lot within 25 minutes. The extraction itself was the slow part. A snapped key in a worn Toyota cylinder has a way of wedging itself at a bad angle, and you have to be patient or you make it worse. I worked it out with the right extractor, no damage to the cylinder.

Once the barrel was clear, I decoded the cut from the lock face, matched it to the correct blank for a domestic-build 98 Camry, and cut a new key on the spot. Turned the ignition and it fired up clean on the first try.

He was pulling out of the lot inside 40 minutes of my arrival. He mentioned the dealer had already quoted him a tow plus a half-day wait. He did not need any of that. Just somebody who shows up with the right tools before the sun gets all the way up.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket key blanks on a 1998 Camry?▼

For a 98 Camry, the key blank just needs to match the correct keyway profile for your specific build. This is a mechanical-only job, so the concern is the cut and the blade fit, not a chip or frequency. I stock blanks verified for both domestic and Japanese-built examples of this generation. An aftermarket blank that fits the keyway correctly and holds a precise cut will work just as well as an OEM blank for daily use.
