Got a call from a guy in Downtown Oxnard who was convinced his 2000 Camry had a bad computer. It would crank all day but never fire, and the security light on the dash was doing nothing unusual. He had already bought a new battery, swapped spark plugs, and was one YouTube video away from ordering an ECU.

I asked him one question: "Anybody ever install an aftermarket alarm or remote start on this car?"

Long pause. "The previous owner might have."

Found it in about two minutes. There was a Viper system tucked behind the lower dash panel with a kill relay spliced into the starter circuit. The relay had failed in the open position. The immobilizer was fine, the 4C transponder chip was reading correctly, the key was good. The car just could not complete the starter circuit because of a dead relay from a system nobody was even using anymore.

I bypassed the failed relay, reconnected the factory wiring, and the Camry started on the first turn. He just sat there with the engine running, staring at the pile of new spark plugs on the passenger seat.

This is the most common "immobilizer problem" I see on these XV20 Camrys. It is almost never the immobilizer. It is almost always some forgotten aftermarket box from a previous owner causing the grief.
