A guy was visiting family in the Five Points neighborhood of Oxnard when he called me. His 2007 Camry was running fine, no drama, but he wanted a spare key made while he had a few days off and wasn't rushing anywhere. His original fob was the 4-button smart key, the one with proximity entry and the push-button start, and he'd never had a second one made since he bought the car.
He asked me flat out whether an aftermarket key blank was going to hold up or whether he was wasting money on something that would fall apart in six months.
It's a fair question. I've seen cheap shells crack at the button corners inside three months. I've seen generic blanks that almost match the circuit board layout but throw registration errors. The blanks I carry for this job have been tested across enough Toyota smart key work that I know which ones hold. The button feel, the weight, the clip retention, all of it is consistent with what the factory fob does. The one thing it won't have is the Toyota logo on the back. That's the only difference.
We did the job in his in-laws' driveway. Cut the blade to match his vehicle, programmed the fob through the diagnostic port, walked every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the lock and unlock buttons, and the start sequence with the fob in range. Everything worked before I packed up.
He asked what the dealer would have quoted. I told him to call and find out if he was curious. He said he'd take my word for it.
