Over in El Rio, I got a call from a woman who had one key to her 2018 Camry and had been meaning to get a spare for about two years. The way she put it: "I kept thinking I'd get around to it."

Then the fob housing cracked, and before she could deal with that, the blade snapped off in the door lock cylinder. Half the key stuck in the lock, the fob body in her hand, no way into the car.

I rebuilt her board into a new shell, verified everything was seated correctly, and cut two fresh blades. Tested all four buttons, tested the start, walked the door handles. The whole thing ran about 40 minutes on site.

She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her to think of a number that would make her wince a little. She was right. The mobile job, done at her apartment, came in at a fraction of that. And she left with two working keys instead of one.

If your fob is cracked or waterlogged, don't throw it away before calling. The chip inside survives a lot. That changes the job.
