My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. I carry the tools to pull the broken piece out of the cylinder without damaging the ignition housing. Once it's out, I can cut a new blade from the extracted piece or pull your key code another way and have you going on site.

One thing specific to this generation Camry: the fob housing uses a small retaining peg that can crack if the key is twisted at an angle in the ignition repeatedly. A few owners on Toyota forums have gone through multiple housings because of this. If the blade is what broke, the electronics inside may still be fine, and in that case we can transplant the chip and remote board into a new shell rather than starting from scratch.

What exactly is a smart key and how does the 2008 Camry version work?

Your 2008 Camry uses a smart key system, which means the fob does two separate jobs at once. It handles the remote functions through the four buttons, and it also carries a transponder that talks to the vehicle's immobilizer when you go to start the car. Both have to be working for the car to run normally.

The fob itself has a mechanical blade folded inside it. That blade is your backup. If the battery dies completely, you can still get in by using the blade on the door cylinder, and then hold the fob body directly against the start button while pressing the brake to use a low-power signal path the car has built in for exactly that situation.

If the blade breaks but the electronics are intact, we can usually move the internal components into a new shell. If both are damaged, or if the fob is lost entirely, we cut and program a replacement on site.

My Toyota is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I try first?

Start with the CR1632 battery. A weak cell is the most common reason that warning appears on this generation, and the symptoms can look much worse than they are: short range, passive unlock stopping on one or both handles, and the dash warning even when the fob is inside the car.

When you swap the battery, make sure it's a CR1632 specifically and that it seats flat against both contacts. A slightly cocked cell gives you the same readings as a dead one.

If a fresh, properly seated battery doesn't clear it, try the manual backup: hold the fob directly against the start button and press the brake. That bypasses the normal antenna loop and uses a short-range inductive signal. If that works, you've confirmed the fob is alive and the issue is antenna or range related, not the fob itself. At that point, it's worth a call because the antenna circuit, the door handle sensors, or the fob's internal board may need a closer look.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2008 Camry. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2008 Camry smart key system does not have an owner-accessible programming sequence. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combination, no DIY relearn for this setup. Registering a new fob requires diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle. So if you picked one up online, you still need a technician with the right tools to pair it to your car before it does anything at all.

The fob you bought may be the right shell and the right frequency, but until it's registered to your specific vehicle, it's just plastic. Bring it with you when you call and we can program it on site in El Rio rather than you paying for a second fob through the dealer.

The passive unlock on my driver door handle stopped working but my passenger handle still works fine. Is the fob failing?

Probably not. If the car still starts normally and the passenger handle responds, the fob is most likely fine.

On the 2008 Camry smart key setup, each door handle has its own antenna sensor built into it. The driver and passenger sides run independently, so one can quit while the other keeps working perfectly. This is a known weak point on this generation, and a lot of forum threads about "fob dying" turn out to be a handle sensor issue once someone actually tests both sides.

Wipe the driver handle area clean and test again. If it stays isolated to that one door, the fob is not the problem. The handle sensor or the wiring at that door is where to look.
