It was a Saturday morning at a youth soccer tournament in Mandalay Beach, Oxnard. A woman flagged me down in the parking lot near the fields. She'd already been there an hour. Her 2010 Camry was locked, the fob had stopped responding, and she had a kid in cleats waiting on her.

I walked the lot, tested range from about thirty feet out, ran lock and unlock several times, checked every button, and did three consecutive starts with a pause between each one. That last part matters because an intermittent fault won't always show itself on the first start. It needs a few cycles to surface.
She didn't need a new fob. She didn't need programming. She needed the right fix confirmed with the right test. She said she'd been quoted a full replacement by someone else. Saved a good chunk staying right there in that parking lot.
