I was already somewhere in Oxnard when the call came in. Friday night, Channel Islands Harbor area, couple coming out of the movies to a Focus that wouldn't cooperate.

The fob had died completely. Not "weak signal" dead. Nothing. The doors wouldn't respond, and they had no idea there was a way to get in and get the car running without the remote working. They assumed the night was over, the car was staying in the lot, and they'd sort it out after the weekend. They called me mostly just to ask.

When I got there I popped the fob open, swapped the battery, and tested range before doing anything else. Remote came right back. That told me the fob itself was fine and we weren't looking at a dead circuit board or a damaged housing. Good news.

Because the remote had gone fully dark for an unknown amount of time, I confirmed the key was still recognized by the immobilizer before calling it done. It was. Car started, remote locked and unlocked clean, all three buttons responding.

They drove home that night. No tow, no waiting until Monday, no dealer appointment. The dealer comparison only came up because they mentioned what they'd been bracing for. I didn't bring it up. When the parts are already in the van, a Friday at 9pm really is just another job.
