Third, watch for upselling that doesn't add up. A common move from bad actors is telling a Ford owner they need an ECU replacement or a full ignition swap when the actual problem is a key that just needs to be cut and programmed. If a locksmith shows up and immediately starts talking about parts replacement before they've even tested anything, that's the moment to ask questions.

What exactly is a remote head key and how does it work on the 2011 Focus?

A remote head key is one piece of hardware doing two jobs. The blade goes into the ignition like any traditional key. On the 2011 Focus, both functions have to be set up correctly or the car won't behave the way you expect. If the chip isn't programmed, the engine won't start even if the key is cut perfectly. If the remote side isn't registered, the buttons do nothing. A correctly cut, correctly programmed key handles both in one unit.

The three buttons handle your basic remote functions. The battery inside is a CR2032, which is easy to find and easy to swap yourself if the remote range starts getting weak. That's always worth trying before assuming anything else is wrong.
